How does the Edel work?

What is the Edel

The Edel is a Hot Water Heat Pump designed and intended as a means of efficiently heating domestic hot water only. It can not be connected to any space heating system. It is essentially a combined air source heat pump and hot water cylinder, and is currently available in 3 sizes; 170 litres, 200 litres, and 270 litres.

How it works

When a demand for hot water is detected by the product, the fan in the upper section draws in ambient outside air via the ducting that has been connected to it. This air passes through the heat pumps evaporator where energy is transferred into the refrigeration circuit, before the cooler air is ducted back out to the exterior of the property.

Refrigeration circuit

The energy transferred into the refrigeration circuit increases the temperature of the refrigerant liquid used (Propane – R290), causing the refrigerant to change state from a liquid into a gas. This refrigerant gas is then compressed, increasing the temperature further.

Energy transfer to water

The hot refrigerant gas is then channelled through the condenser which is wrapped around the cylinders body, and the heat is transferred through to the water contained within.

Heating up times

As this is only a small heat pump the output is relatively low and therefore, reheat times will be longer than traditional hot water cylinder immersions. This will also be dependent on thing like target temperature, water usage and the program set on the product.

Program modes

The operating times of the product will be determined by the integrated timer program. This controls when the product will operate and which mode it will operate in.

There are 3 operating modes:

  • Frost protection
  • Eco – This will use only the heat pump to heat the water
  • Comfort – This will use both the heat pump and electric immersion to heat the water, if needed.

The timer program can be adjusted to the needs of the end user however, consideration must be given to the length of time the unit is allowed to heat the water for.
